都市デザイン研究室では、都市計画・建築計画・防災・アクセシビリティ・エリアマネジメントなど、幅広いテーマに取り組む学生・研究者を歓迎しています。「まちの現場」に足を運び、データと対話を積み重ねながら、快適・安全・サステイナブルな都市環境のあり方を一緒に考えましょう。
研究室のテーマは一つではありません。アジア都市の水害、高齢者の外出行動と防災、公園の使われ方、エリアマネジメント、緑道・水辺空間の再生など、現在進行中のプロジェクトは多岐にわたります。「自分のやりたいこと」を持って来てください。一緒に研究テーマを育てていきます。

東京都市大学環境学部の3年生から研究室配属を希望される方へ
フィールドワーク・GIS分析・アンケート調査・ヒアリングなど、多様な手法を組み合わせた研究に取り組みます。都市計画や建築計画に関心があれば、専門的な知識や経験は配属時点で問いません。都市が好き、社会の課題に向き合いたいという気持ちを大切にしています。

大学院修士課程・博士課程への進学を希望される方へ
丹羽は、東京都市大学・エディスコーワン大学 国際連携環境融合科学専攻（JDP）の専任指導教員です。JDPはすべての授業を英語で行う修士課程プログラムで、修了時には東京都市大学とオーストラリアのエディスコーワン大学の連名で学位（Master of Environmental Studies）が授与されます。

また、大学院環境情報学研究科（環境情報学専攻・都市生活学専攻）にも兼任教員として所属しており、同研究科の修士課程・博士課程の学生も受け入れています。他大学・他学部からの進学も歓迎します。
行政・民間との連携プロジェクトや国際共同研究など、大学院生が研究の中核を担う機会が多くあります。研究テーマは学生自身の問題意識を起点に、指導教員と対話しながら設計していきます。

当研究室では博士課程への進学を強く歓迎しています。特に、まちづくり・都市計画・建築・防災・交通・環境などの現場で活躍されている社会人の方に、ぜひ扉を叩いていただきたいと考えています。
行政・コンサルタント・デベロッパー・NPO・交通事業者など、実務の現場で積み重ねてきた経験と問題意識は、それ自体が研究の出発点になります。「なぜこの現場ではうまくいかないのか」「この政策は本当に効果があるのか」——そういった実践から生まれる問いを、学術的な方法論で深めることを一緒に取り組みましょう。
当研究室では、働きながら無理なく研究を継続できるよう、相談しながら研究スケジュールを設計します。社会人博士の取得に向けて、丁寧にサポートします。
留学生・海外からの研究者の方へ
当研究室は国際共同研究に積極的に取り組んでおり、海外からの学生・研究者を歓迎しています。アジア都市の水害・猛暑リスク、パブリックスペースの包摂的設計、高齢者の防災行動など、国際的な比較研究を複数進めています。東南アジア・東アジアの都市問題に関心をお持ちの方には、特に充実した研究環境をご提供できます。

Join Our Laboratory
The Urban Design Laboratory welcomes students and researchers with interests across a wide range of themes — urban flood resilience, accessibility and mobility, disaster preparedness, public space design, area management, waterfront planning, and more. Our research is grounded in fieldwork and shaped by genuine curiosity about cities and the people who live in them.
There is no single ‘right’ topic to bring to this lab. We encourage prospective members to come with their own questions, and we work together to develop them into meaningful research.
Undergraduate Students
Students in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at Tokyo City University are welcome to apply for laboratory placement from their third year. No prior specialist knowledge is required — what matters most is a genuine passion for cities and urban environments, and a willingness to engage with real social challenges.

Master’s and Doctoral Programs
Prof. Yukari Niwa serves as a dedicated faculty supervisor in the International Collaborative Program of Transdisciplinary Sciences for Sustainability between Tokyo City University and Edith Cowan University (JDP) — a fully English-taught Master’s program leading to a joint degree (Master of Environmental Studies) awarded by both universities. Students spend one semester at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia.

Prof. Niwa also holds a concurrent appointment in the Graduate School of Environmental Information (Department of Environmental Information / Department of Urban Life Studies), and accepts Master’s and Doctoral students through this program as well. Applications from students outside Tokyo City University are warmly encouraged.
Graduate students play a central role in our research projects, collaborating with partner municipalities, government agencies, and international researchers. Research topics are developed through close dialogue between the student and supervisor.

Doctoral Program — Working Professionals Especially Welcome
We strongly encourage applications to the doctoral program, and we particularly welcome working professionals in urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, disaster management, transportation, environmental policy, and related fields.
The experience and questions that arise from years of professional practice are an invaluable foundation for doctoral research. ‘Why doesn’t this policy work as intended?’ ‘What actually makes a neighborhood resilient?’ — if you have questions like these, shaped by real experience in the field, this laboratory is a place to pursue them rigorously.
We work with each doctoral student individually to design a research schedule that is compatible with continued professional work. We are committed to supporting you through to completion.
International Students and Visiting Researchers
Our laboratory is actively engaged in international collaborative research and warmly welcomes students and researchers from abroad. Current projects span flood risk, public space design, and inclusive urban environments across East and Southeast Asian cities.
