Research <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Niwa Laboratory pursues research toward building comfortable, safe, and sustainable urban environments. Our current focus is on inclusive urban resilience in Asian cities, ensuring that disaster preparedness and everyday livability are simultaneously achieved for all residents, including those most vulnerable to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current Research Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

[1] Accessibility and Resilience for Vulnerable Populations in Asian Cities (JSPS KAKENHI Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research B, PI)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project investigates flood and heat risks in four Asian cities \u2014 Seoul, Hanoi, Jakarta, and Tokyo \u2014 with a focus on populations that are most at risk during disasters. We have developed an original Inclusive Balance Index that jointly evaluates a neighborhood’s everyday mobility, accessibility, and flood resilience. Field surveys are conducted in close collaboration with Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE). We have also hosted researchers from BINUS University (Indonesia) in Japan for active research exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[2] Individual Adaptive Behavior and Risk Perception Under Escalating Flood Frequency (JSPS KAKENHI Transformative Research Areas A, Open Call Research, PI)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This study examines how residents’ flood risk perceptions and adaptive behaviors change under stepwise flood frequency scenarios, from the current situation to once per year and then to once per month. Using nationwide survey data, we aim to shift flood risk research from a static assessment to a dynamic understanding of adaptive processes. A major field site is Joso City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where the study is conducted ten years after the Kinugawa River flood in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[3] Green Community Model for Disaster Resilience (Sumitomo Foundation Environmental Research Grant)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project analyzes the relationship between the daily mobility patterns of older adults and their capacity to respond to disasters. Using a GIS analysis of greenery networks and emergency facility distributions across Tokyo wards, we are developing a community-level disaster mitigation model that leverages urban green infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[4] Urban Park Activity Research (in collaboration with Kanagawa Prefecture)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In partnership with Kanagawa Prefecture’s Urban Parks Division, we are conducting activity surveys and evacuation simulations at Tsujido Seaside Park and Sagamihara Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[5] Urban Management Research (in collaboration with TCCM and other partners)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our area management research spans a wide range of urban contexts, from central Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, to major business districts in central Tokyo, such as the Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho (OMY) district and Toranomon Hills. This comparative perspective allows us to explore how voluntary urban governance by residents, business owners, and landowners operates differently across city scales and contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Research Network<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Laboratory also maintains active partnerships with Asian research institutions. We also coordinate a research exchange subcommittee, the Study Group on Inclusive Spatial Design for the Climate Change Era, under the City Planning Institute of Japan, bringing together researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Study Group on Inclusive Spatial Design for the Climate Change Era<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Research Exchange Subcommittee A, City Planning Institute of Japan (2025\u20132028)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This research group, led by Prof. Yukari Niwa, was adopted as Research Exchange Subcommittee A of the City Planning Institute of Japan (CPIJ) in 2025. Originally emerging from a JSPS-funded project on accessibility and resilience for vulnerable populations in Asian cities, the group has grown through an open call into a vibrant interdisciplinary community, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from academia, industry, and government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall Theme: Rethinking Public Spaces in Asian Cities \u2014 Toward Inclusive Spatial Design in the Climate Change Era<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on fieldwork conducted in Tokyo, Seoul, Hanoi, and Jakarta, this group is expanding its geographic scope to encompass a broader range of East and Southeast Asian cities, including Singapore, as its research network continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
